Oil Heaters

Preferred Utilities provides a complete line of oil heaters, for both internal and external tank applications. These oil heaters are used primarily to maintain the fuel oil temperature during standby and cold starting conditions.

Tank Internal Application

[Technical Information]

Suction Bell Heater - Model SB, SB-20, SB-30, SB-40 and SB-60

The Suction Bells are used in preheated heavy oil underground tanks to provide a pool of warm oil without wasteful heating of the entire tank.

Operation

Hot oil from the return line is confined within the suction bell where it blends with oil from storage to maintain a pumpable temperature at the bottom of the suction stub. When the volume of oil returned from the electric heater does not provide sufficient heat, models with internal coils should be used.

Tank Heating Coils - Model B-60 and B-70

The Tank Heating Coils are used:

  • On underground tanks when excessive ground water, unusually cold ground conditions, and/or high pour point oils require reserve heating capability.
  • When there is a need for radiated heat in the tank to assist the oil in storage to flow towards the suction stub.

Suction Stub Heaters - Model SS

The Model SS Suction Stub Heater specifically designed to maintain residual fuel oil in the tank suction stub at a pumpable temperature during the times that the oil is not flowing.

  • Low watt density heater
  • Thermostatically controlled
  • Electric immersion type fuel oil heater

[Technical Information]

Cross Flow Steam/Oil Heaters

Cross Flow Heaters are steam to oil exchangers designed to provide a dependable and economical means of preheating fuel oil.

  • Installed on the discharge of the oil pump (Note: Continuous circulation of the oil whenever steam is being admitted to the heater must be assured)
  • Constructed of carbon steel shell, cast iron heads, steel tubes and steel tube sheets
  • Designed for a maximum 150 psi working pressure on the steam side and a 250 psi on the oil side
  • Oil heating capacities from 35 to 4400 GPH, depending on steam pressure and required oil temperature rate
  • U type tube bundle permits easy removal for cleaning or replacement

Electric Oil Heaters - Model L

Preferred Electric Oil Heaters are used for preheating fuel oil as it is pumped through the piping system.

  • The thermostatically controlled electric immersion heating element is a housed in a welded steel manifold which is suitable for pressures up to 150 psi
  • The oil temperature thermostat is adjustable over the range from 100° F to 220° F
  • Standard heaters are furnished with wattage ratings based on 208, 220/240, or 440/480 volts
  • Three different watt densities:
    • Low Watt Density, Series E – have 12 watts per square inch of heating surface
    • Medium Watt Density, Series M – have 18 watts per square inch of heating surface
    • High Watt Density, Series S – have 24 watts per square inch of heating surface
  • Easy element removal for cleaning or replacement
  • UL approved

Safety Type Oil Heaters

Safety Type Oil Heaters are hot water or steam to oil double wall heat exchangers providing a reliable, efficient, and safe method of heating oil for boiler plant operation.

  • The hazard of a tube failure causing fuel oil contamination of the boiler and associated piping is minimized.
  • Should a leak occur, the oil mixes only with the sealing fluid and is visually indicated at the rear safety chamber. Oil does not enter the boiler water or condensate system
  • It has six pass design, and utilizes a tube within a tube construction.
  • 225 psi test pressure and 100 psi working pressure in both shell and tubes.
  • Oil heating capacities from 85 to 25,000 GPH (20 to 100 F oil temperature rise) depending on the steam pressure
